HOW HEALTHY IS OUR BREED ?
A breeders
remark "Our cats are healthy" or "The Maine Coon cat is a robust
breed" unfortunately is not enough to comment a cats health yet.
Due to many years of practising close to excessive linebreeding arose in the
past few years more frequent genetic disorders in different lines which partly
constitute a deadly threat for the cats. The improving possibilities of early
diagnosis of genetic deseases allow us nowadays to test our animals preventive
for the existence of such genetic defects.
Our cats are tested
on a regular basis for HD (Hip
Displasia), HCM
(Hypertrophic CardioMyopathy, a heart desease) and PKD
(Polycystic Kidney Desease). Since there are very special gadgets and
procedures requested it aren't so much places where these examinations could
be done. Our cats are screened and x-rayed at the University of Veterinary
Medicine of Vienna, Austria. Screenings for HCM and PKD will be examined immediately
at the University, x-rays for HD will be sent to OFA
for evaluation.

HCM
|
The genetic form of Hypertrophic CardioMyopathy means a slowly developing malformation of the heart. An autosomal dominant gene causes increasing growth of the cells of the left heart chamber. The left ventricle or the heart wall increases in thickness above what is considered normal. The heart needs more and more strength for the blood circulation until it finally wanes. HCM is an absolutely deadly disease. An ultrasound (Color Doppler Equipment) can sometimes pick up a thickening of the heart muscle or heart wall during the first year. However, regular re-screening - at least up to age 5 - is recommended by the specialists. |

HD
|
Hip dysplasia means a genetic condition where hip joints aren't optimally connected. Although the muscles of a cat often prevent the disease to become symptomatic, cats may suffer a considerable restriction of movement and some even have to be euthanized from their pain. |

PKD
|
Polycystic Kidney Desease is more commonly seen in other breeds but does affect the Maine Coon to some extent. It is also inherited. Kidneys are completly infiltrated with smaller and bigger cysts and will stop working after a short time. |
