Maine cats of 1900 (Courtesy B. Kus)

About 1800 we "Maine cats" were already wellknown among the inhabitants of Maine. Our very first ancestor mentioned in writing was a black and white Maine cat named "Captain Jenks of The Horse Marines" and was owned by Mrs. F.R. Pierce. She dates Captain Jenks time of doing his best about 1861. In the following years our population developed more and more and about 1880 you could find us at cat shows as a definite breed. Now many of us went onto the show bench. One of our very famous ancestors was certainly "Cosey", a brown tabby Maine cat, owned by Mrs. Fred Brown. Cosey won the First National Cat Show in New York in 1895.
